Since 1999, the City of Yorba Linda has honored outstanding athletic accomplishments by individuals or teams from Yorba Linda, or outstanding contributions made by any athletic organization serving Yorba Linda through the Athletic Achievement Wall of Fame Program. A total of 55 recipients spanning a wide variety of athletic disciplines have been honored since the inception of the program. Recipients are honored by having their name displayed on a bronze plaque on the Wall of Fame, which is located at the Thomas Lasorda Jr. Field House. Nominations are collected on an annual basis and recipients are selected by the City's Parks and Recreation Commission.
On Saturday, June 23, 2018, community members gathered at the Thomas Lasorda Jr. Field House to honor the two latest inductees to the program, Coach Steve Gullotti and the 2017 Esperanza High School Men's Basketball Team.. The ceremony included remarks from Councilmember Lindsey reflecting on the recipient's achievements, as well as remarks by the recipients. Councilmember Beth Haney was also in attendance to congratulate the recipients.
Coach Steve Gullotti
Coach Gullotti served as the El Dorado High School Varsity Baseball coach from 1981 to 2009, during which his teams had many great successes, including:
- Four CIF Championship game appearances, two resulting in CIF Championship titles (1989 and 1999), which led Coach Gullotti to receiving CIF Coach of the Year award both years;
- California State Champions in 1999;
- League Champions seven times;
- 21 playoff appearances;
- 512 career wins;
- Co-Founder of the National Classic High School Baseball Tournament in 1990;
- Inducted to the CIF Hall of Fame in 2017; and
- Of Gullotti's former players, 70 have played at the collegiate level, 30 have played professionally, and 7 have made it to the Major Leagues.
Throughout his 28 years of coaching, Gullotti has impacted the lives of many students, players, parents, and colleagues. The City received four letters of recommendation from former players, citing that Gullotti had instilled the values of character, hard work, discipline, respect, self-sacrifice, and service to others within the players he coached.
Gullotti and his wife, Brianne, have been residents of Yorba Linda since 1992 and have two adult children, Janelle and Lauren. To this day, he continues to be an active member of the El Dorado community and maintains strong ties to his school district colleagues and former players.
2017 Esperanza high school men's basketball team
The 2017 Esperanza High School Men's Basketball Team was honored for their historic 2017 season which culminated in them receiving the 2017 Division II State Championship. The team began their pre-season by winning the Canyon/Esperanza Tip Off and the Orange Holiday Classic Tournaments. Their season continued with back-to-back Crestview League championships. As the team entered the playoffs they were seeded #2 in the Southern California Regionals, which led them to the Division II State Championship game in Sacramento, which they won with a score of 72-65.
Most notable about the team is that they all played basketball together since third and fourth grade, beginning their careers with the local organization's National Junior Basketball and Yorba Linda Basketball. Many of the player even played in the gymnasium at the Thomas Lasorda Jr. Field House where the Wall of Fame is located.
