City Flag Contest

The City of Yorba Linda is seeking assistance from residents to design the City of Yorba Linda flag.  A contest has been developed to allow the community to participate in the process. Thank you and good luck!

  • The contest is limited to Yorba Linda residents.
  • Only one submission per person is allowed. A narrative must also be submitted with the flag design describing the symbolism and/or explaining design features. Narratives are limited to 500 words.
  • Submissions should follow the flag design guidelines.
City Flag


  1. Keep It Simple: The flag should be so simple that a child can draw it from memory.
  2. Use Meaningful Symbolism: The flag’s images, colors, or patterns should relate to what it symbolizes.
  3. Use 2-3 Basic Colors: Limit the number of colors on the flag to three, which contrast well and come from the standard color set.
  4. No Lettering or Seals:  Writing of any kind or an organization’s seal is discouraged.
  5. Be Distinctive or Be Related: Avoid duplicating other flags, but use similarities to show connections.
  • Flags are to be designed in 3'x5' format (3 inches tall x 5 inches wide) and must be submitted with the application. If the design is created with a graphic design program, it must be attached to the application. 
  • All designs must be unique and may not include any copyrighted content.

  • The designs must be attached to the application. If the design is created in a graphic design program, attach the design in a 3x5 format. 
  • Entries are due by February 22, 2021, at 5:00 pm. Late entries will not be accepted.


All entries will be reviewed by a panel of judges. The top entries, as determined by the panel, may be submitted to the City Council for final approval.  The City may also choose not to adopt any of the submitted designs. If a winning flag design is selected, the applicant will receive recognition at a City Council meeting or community event and a printed flag.  The winner of the contest will be announced in April 2021.


The entrant represents that the design is the entrant’s own design and not that of a third party or otherwise legally restricted for use by the City. All entries submitted to the City of Yorba Linda for consideration shall become the property of the City of Yorba Linda, and may be modified, reproduced, and published at the City’s sole discretion. The City of Yorba Linda will have exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the design. The City of  Yorba Linda assumes no responsibility for the artwork submitted and is not responsible for loss or damage of the entries. Entry constitutes acceptance of all rules and consent to use the entrant’s name and likeness as permitted by law, without compensation.
