In May of 1959, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD) formed the first law enforcement explorer post in the nation, Post Number 449. This co-educational program is built for young adults ages 14 to 20 and developed and supervised by Police Services in partnership with local community organizations. The members are referred to as “Explorers” as they are provided opportunities to explore a career in law enforcement.
As an Explorer, young adults have the opportunity to build leadership skills while assisting the OCSD in community and civic events. Explorers can broaden their understanding of the challenges and the job skills that make up their community's police services. In addition to gaining a working knowledge of police work, participants have the opportunity to give back to their community. Although Post 449 is law enforcement oriented, Explorers are volunteers and do not serve as police employees, sworn or civilian.
